Multinational Dahua Hikvision video surveillance, video compression transmission, domestic cloud storage?? Solution//Global IPLC service provider of Shigeng Communication
一、The video surveillance of multinational enterprises' overseas factories, parks, and warehouses usually has deployed a large number of Hikvision and Dahua equipment, and is supported by iVMS, SmartPSS, Lecheng Cloud, or third-party video aggregation platforms. The real difficulty lies not in "installing cameras", but in how to gather these scattered video streams overseas at an affordable cost, with stable quality and compliance, and deposit them into domestic cloud storage, forming a closed loop of unified preview, unified retrieval, and unified operation and maintenance.
This article presents a practical overall architecture from five aspects: software integration, intelligent compression, cross-border transmission, domestic cloud storage, and compliance operation and maintenance.
1. Software integration: Unified access first, then unified retrieval
Overseas sites often have equipment from multiple brands such as Hikvision, Dahua, and Yushi, and relying directly on a single vendor platform can easily lead to the fragmentation of "one system for each brand". A more prudent approach is to establish a three-layer structure of "local devices+unified access layer+domestic platform".
Hikvision devices can continue to use platforms such as iVMS, Hik Connect, and Hikvision Interconnect; Dahua equipment can continue to use platforms such as SmartPSS, Lecheng Cloud, DSS, etc. If cross brand unified management is required, it can be connected to video aggregation platforms or self-developed platforms through universal protocols such as ONVIF, RTSP, GB/T 28181, etc. GB/T 28181 is suitable for project cascading and unified resource management, ONVIF is suitable for cross brand device discovery and streaming, and RTSP is suitable for streaming media server pull and transcoding.
The domestic headquarters does not need to directly connect every NVR overseas, but abstracts overseas sites into a "video resource pool" through a unified video access gateway or streaming media node. This way, even if the camera brand is changed, the location is expanded, or the network is adjusted in the future, there is no need for frequent modifications on the domestic platform side.
2. Intelligent compression: reducing cross-border bandwidth pressure from the source
The biggest cost of transmitting overseas videos back to China comes from bandwidth. If compression is not done and multiple 1080P or 4K main streams are directly transmitted across borders, it will quickly occupy the export bandwidth and cause image lag, increased latency, and uncontrolled storage costs.
The first layer of compression comes from encoding standards. Hikvision and Dahua devices generally support H.265, which can save about half of the bandwidth compared to H.264. On this basis, Hikvision H.265+, Dahua Smart H.265, and further AI intelligent coding can achieve higher compression of static backgrounds and low value areas, while preserving more details of key targets such as personnel, vehicles, and entrances and exits. Hikvision Guanlan Coding will provide intelligent rate scheduling capabilities for large-scale monitoring and storage scenarios by 2026. Official data shows that it can significantly reduce storage and bandwidth usage while ensuring the image quality of key targets.
The second layer of compression comes from stream separation. Daily remote preview should prioritize the use of sub streams, while the main stream should be retained in the overseas local NVR for evidence collection. Only when it is necessary to review details, export evidence, or remotely access high-definition clips, can short clips of the main stream be pulled as needed. This strategy can reduce cross-border traffic from TB level to GB level.
The third layer of compression is event driven. Not all images need to be transmitted back to China in real-time. Uploading can be triggered by events such as motion detection, cross-border alarm, access control linkage, and abnormal shutdown alarm. Change the "7 × 24 full feedback" to "priority feedback for key events+low stream resident preview+on-demand pulling of high-definition clips".
3. Cross border transmission: from unstable public network to private network predictable
The link from overseas sites to domestic headquarters usually suffers from high latency, high packet loss, routing detours, and congestion during peak hours. Relying solely on public RTSP or vendor P2P cloud services can easily lead to lag and disconnection as the number of nodes increases and concurrency improves.
It is recommended to use SD-WAN or Global Video Private Network as the cross-border transmission base. Deploying industrial grade video access gateways at overseas sites, aggregating multiple links such as local broadband and 4G/5G; After optimizing through TCP acceleration, forward error correction, packet loss retransmission, etc., the video enters the private backbone or optimized link; The domestic end is received by the aggregation gateway and then connected to the existing monitoring platform. This architecture does not require a fixed public IP address for each overseas site, nor does it require complex port mapping, and deployment speed is significantly faster than traditional dedicated lines.
If enterprises have extremely high requirements for stability, a hybrid model of "dedicated line guarantee+SD-WAN elastic expansion" can be adopted. The core alarm flow and real-time command flow are routed through dedicated lines or high priority channels; Daily preview streaming SD-WAN; High definition historical recordings can be sent back as needed. For overseas construction sites, mining areas, and ports with extremely limited bandwidth, 4G/5G industrial routers can also be used to achieve broadband free access.
4. Domestic cloud storage: graded storage, on-demand retrieval
After overseas videos enter China, it is not recommended to store them all in their original main stream for a long time. A more reasonable approach is to establish a "hot, warm, cold" hierarchical storage system.
Recent recordings can be stored in high-performance storage for quick playback, event retrieval, and remote access; Videos that exceed a certain period are migrated to low-cost object storage, such as Alibaba Cloud OSS and other cloud storage resources, to meet long-term archiving and auditing requirements. Object storage is suitable for storing HLS shards, MP4 evidence clips, alarm recordings, and compressed low stream videos.
Storage strategies should be designed around business value. Ordinary areas can be reserved for 7-30 days, while key entrances and exits, loading and unloading areas, finance rooms, and high-risk operation areas can be reserved for 90 days or longer. All recordings should retain metadata such as timestamp, location number, event type, and operator for quick location by time, region, and event.
If the overseas site already has an NVR locally, domestic cloud storage can only save critical event recordings, low stream preview recordings, and high-definition clips pulled as needed. This can reduce both cross-border bandwidth and domestic cloud storage costs.
Conclusion
Overseas Hikvision and Dahua equipment are connected to local NVRs or video gateways through ONVIF/RTSP/GB28181; Priority is given to using H.265+/Smart H.265/AI intelligent encoding compression locally, with the main stream stored locally and sub streams and events transmitted back to China through SD-WAN or video private networks; The domestic video aggregation platform is responsible for unified preview, alarm linkage, and permission management; Key recordings, alarm clips, and historical archives are written into domestic cloud object storage; The operation and maintenance platform centrally monitors equipment status, storage capacity, and cross-border link quality.
