Overseas project monitoring access+video compression feedback+domestic cloud storage?? Solution//Global IPLC service provider of Shigeng Communication

一、The biggest challenge in doing video surveillance for overseas projects is not whether there are cameras, but whether the equipment can be connected, the video can be transmitted back, the storage is compliant, and it can be viewed clearly domestically. Overseas construction sites, mining areas, ports, ships, and parks often have limited bandwidth and unstable links, and camera brands may include Hikvision, Dahua, and ONVIF equipment. Directly transmitting back to China can easily result in lag, disconnection, high storage costs, and compliance risks.

A more secure approach is to adopt a layered architecture of "edge access+intelligent compression+cloud transfer+domestic storage".

1. Overall architecture concept

Priority should be given to retaining local recording capabilities on overseas sites to avoid real-time transmission of all videos back to China. The front-end camera or NVR is connected to the edge gateway or cloud platform through protocols such as GB/T 28181, RTMP, RTSP, ONVIF, etc., and then the edge gateway completes protocol conversion, bitrate adaptation, event filtering, and encrypted upload. The cloud is responsible for streaming media distribution, permission management, video indexing, and alarm linkage, while the domestic headquarters only needs to access real-time images or playback clips as needed.

For multi branch overseas projects, it is recommended to adopt live streaming mode: the device pushes the stream to the cloud, and the domestic client pulls the stream from the cloud for viewing. This is more stable than P2P direct connection and more suitable for multiple people to access at the same time.

2. Overseas monitoring access: solving the problem of "connectivity" first

The overseas on-site network environment is complex, and many devices do not have fixed public IP addresses. Local operators may also restrict port mapping. The traditional DDNS direct connection method has poor stability and is not recommended as the main solution.

Recommend three types of access methods:

National standard GB/T 28181 access: suitable for unified access of multi brand equipment, and domestic headquarters can use a unified platform to manage Hikvision, Dahua, and ONVIF equipment.

Manufacturer cloud access: such as Hikvision Hik Connect and Dahua Cloud Connection, suitable for fast deployment of small and medium-sized projects with low deployment barriers.

Third party video cloud platform: suitable for scenarios with existing devices and a desire for rapid cloudification, supporting RTSP/ONVIF/GB28181 hybrid access.

It is recommended to keep the NVR local recording or SD card cache on site. When the network is interrupted, the local recording will not be lost; After the network is restored, send back key segments according to events or time periods.

3. Video compression feedback: Do not blindly transmit full HD

Cross border bandwidth costs are high and fluctuate greatly, and 24-hour continuous transmission of high-definition videos is neither economical nor stable. The compression strategy should be designed in a hierarchical manner.

Daily status metadata transmission: only uploading device heartbeat, alarm status, screenshot index, almost does not occupy bandwidth.

Event triggered video or image feedback: motion detection, personnel intrusion, equipment abnormality, production alarm triggered short video or image feedback.

On demand access to real-time streaming: When the domestic headquarters needs to view the scene, they can pull the real-time screen.

Enabling Super Compression in Weak Network Scenarios: In environments such as satellite, 4G, and narrowband private networks, AI aware compression or generative video compression techniques can be used to significantly reduce bitrate.

There are currently two mature compression directions in the industry. One type is traditional encoding enhancement, which reduces bandwidth through H.265/ROI encoding, dynamic bitrate, and keyframe optimization; Another type is generative video compression and intelligent transmission network AI Flow technology, which can maintain image coherence even at extremely low bandwidth, suitable for ocean going ships, remote mining areas, and emergency scenarios. However, generative compression involves image reconstruction, and if used for evidence collection, auditing, and security event tracing, careful evaluation of image authenticity and evidence validity is required.

4. Cross border transmission link: combination of dedicated line, SD-WAN and cloud transit

Overseas video transmission back to China, the quality of the link directly determines the experience.

International dedicated line/MPLS: It has the best stability and is suitable for scenarios such as banking, energy, mining, etc. that require high real-time performance, but the cost is relatively high.

SD-WAN: High cost-effectiveness, dynamic routing based on link quality, suitable for multi branch overseas projects.

Cloud transfer: Overseas devices first push traffic to the nearest cloud node, and domestic users then pull traffic from the domestic node to avoid all traffic directly crossing the public network.

Edge node acceleration: With the help of global acceleration from Segong Communication, video access points can be placed closer to the scene.

If the cloud is deployed overseas, domestic access will be affected by cross-border links; If the cloud is deployed domestically, overseas uploads will be limited by local upstream bandwidth. We usually recommend a hybrid path of "overseas nearby access+domestic retrieval acceleration".

Conclusion

The cloud based monitoring of overseas projects cannot be simply understood as' connecting cameras to domestic servers'. A more reasonable route is: overseas edge access ensures device online, intelligent compression reduces cross-border bandwidth, cloud transfer enhances retrieval experience, domestic tiered storage controls costs, while incorporating data retention, access permissions, and cross-border compliance into the same design. This can not only solve the problem of "seeing clearly and transmitting back", but also avoid the risk of uncontrolled storage costs and compliance risks in the later stage.
